The importance of affirmations
Are you ever hard on yourself? You know when you have a great idea or you want to make a change, but those pesky thoughts that come through take over and say “hey, you can’t do this, you're not smart enough, and your definitely not good enough why even bother?” Yea me too. Here is something that really helped me to understand the importance of positive affirmations.
Imagine, wherever you are, you look to your right, and you see a young child sitting down next to you. You notice that her knees are bent and pulled to her chest. Her arms wrapped around to the front of her shins, tightly hugging them in as she is resting her head face down on the tops of her bent knees. You sense something is wrong, so you gently touch her shoulder as if to ask if she is okay. She looks up at you. In this moment you realize that she is you, yourself as a young child. You immediately feel the pain and fear she is experiencing; you don’t know what happened, but you feel it. You know someone told her something mean, and it hurt her, really, really hurt her.
This child needs your love, your guidance, your trust and your help. Would you tell her the same things you tell yourself today? My guess is that you speak positive to her. “You are amazing”, “You are so strong”, “You are smart”, “You are so loved”, “I love you”. So you tell her a few words and instantly she perks up. You physically feel lighter, happier and relieved that she finally has someone who speaks good things to her, someone she can trust.
Because of the limited beliefs we have held on to year after year after year, we have lost sight of who our true authentic self is. We lack the recognition that you are that child, we still need that love, support and guidance. We wouldn’t tell our younger selves to “suck it up”, “you’re not worth it”, “you can’t do it”, “you’re going to fail”. So why would you tell yourself that now? You are still that young girl, show her the love that you both deserve.
When you start to say affirmations daily your subconscious mind starts to believe it, therefore it’s the truth. You start to rewire the way your mind views your reality which was written from past experiences. If reality is the way in which you perceive it, wouldn’t it be cool if you can perceive a reality that works with you and for you? It is possible, say it and start to believe it. Lift that little girl up and tell her that the world is her oyster, and she can do whatever her mind can dream up.
